Sources of forest wood biomass available for energy production:

  • fuel wood;
  • woodworking residues;
  • unmerchantable wood;
  • logging residues.

The forested biomass potential, which is accounted for and theoretically available for energy production is 64-80% of the volume of logging. Currently unaccounted forest residues are estimated by the experts of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine to be an additional + 14% of the volume of logging. This is wood residues (mainly branches and wood chips) that were generated during logging and was left in the forest.

The area of logging in Ukraine in recent years is about 400 thousand hectares and the volume of harvesting – up to 22 million m3 of wood per year. In 2018, the amount of harvested wood in Ukraine amounted to 22.5 million m3 (by types of forest products: Roundwood for business – 8.98 million m3, wood fuel – 10.72 million m3, the remaining 2.83 million m3 – unmerchantable wood). Thus, accounts theoretically available potential of forest biomass ranges from 14.4 to 18.0 million m3/year. And the total theoretically available potential of forest biomass (both calculated and unaccounted) ranges from 17.6 to 21.2 million m3/year.
