Dear friends and colleagues!

Invasion of Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine, blocking and threats to military bases of the armed forces of Ukraine, and failure by the Russian Federation to comply with several international agreements, including the Budapest Memorandum, was a shock to the whole world and, above all, for the Ukrainian people, who used to treat friendly their Eastern neighbor.

One of the reasons for such a military intervention by the Russian Federation, of course, are the events of November 2013 – February 2014, which led to the definition of the European vector of Ukrainian development, the Yanukovych’s regime overthrow, as well as the establishment of civil society and construction of Ukrainians’ national identity.

Taking into account the worsening of political and economic relations with Russia, one of the key issues that need to be urgently addressed in Ukraine is achievement of energy security and independence from imported Russian natural gas. Huge role in these terms shall be played by the renewable energy. In particular, Ukraine has a high potential for deployment of energy generation from biomass and biogas technologies.

The Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABio) is convinced that the development of renewable energy sector in our country will both strengthen the energy security and remove the political and social tensions via creating new jobs and promoting economic development at the local level. Deployment of bioenergy technologies will have a particularly positive impact on the development of such energy-dependent regions as Crimea and Southern Ukraine.

We appeal to the international bioenergy community to condemn the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation regarding the Autonomous Republic of Crimea as an integral part of Ukraine.
