Ukraine has taken a confident step into the future \u2014 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/gals-agro.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Gals Agro&#8221; company<\/a><em> has commissioned the first biomethane plant in the country.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This took place at one of the company&#8217;s six biogas facilities with a capacity of 6.9 MW. 600 m\u00b3\/hour of raw biogas is supplied for enrichment, from which 330 m\u00b3\/hour of biomethane is produced (equivalent to 1.3 MW electrical).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1364\" src=\"https:\/\/uabio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC_7700.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uabio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC_7700.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/uabio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC_7700-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uabio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC_7700-1536x1023.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the installation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This first biogas plant of &#8220;Gals Agro&#8221; was put into operation in 2018. The first phase of the plant had an electrical capacity of 2.4 MW. In 2020, construction of the plant&#8217;s second phase began, which allowed to increase the capacity by 4.5 MW to a total of 6.9 MW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, a reserve capacity for biogas production of 1.5 MW (electrical) was provided, equivalent to up to <strong>3 million m\u00b3 of biomethane per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fermentation technology<\/strong> \u2014 mesophilic anaerobic fermentation of organic feedstock with the production of biogas, which is then supplied to a cogeneration system for the production of thermal and electrical energy. More advanced technologies of fermentation (thermophilic instead of mesophilic), gas preparation and gas purification were applied. At the same time, the first phase was renovated to enhance the efficiency of the technological processes. Additional cogenerators, a biogas drying system, sulfur removal, and new mixers were installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Basic feedstock<\/strong>: sugar beet pulp after sugar production, beet molasses, plant residues, energy crop silage, food and feed production waste, and cattle manure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biomethane<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, a decision was made to equip the plant with a biomethane production module. <br>It was due to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The increase in natural gas prices and the prospect of further price rises.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>General European trends towards reducing the use of fossil energy sources and dependence on Russian gas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulties in timely payments for renewable energy production.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The European Union&#8217;s encouragement for a general reduction in CO2 emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The decarbonization of all stages of production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default biogas to biomethane occurs in a membrane-type unit from the Dutch company Bright (represented in Ukraine by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-energy.com.ua\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pro-Energy<\/a>). The reconstruction of the biogas plant was carried out by the Ukrainian company <a href=\"https:\/\/ac-group.in.ua\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AC GROUP<\/a>.
