This factsheet is the final part of the information campaign of the European Biogas Association “Biogases: beyond energy”<\/a>, which focuses on the research of different biogas technologies for the development of the European bioeconomy. In total, there will be six such publications throughout the year. Five with Ukrainian translation are already available\u00a0on the SAF platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is this important?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The production and use of biogases in the EU must comply with a set of sustainability criteria that came into force in 2018. These criteria ensure that sourcing feedstock does not negatively impact on biodiversity and the environment, biogases are used in an efficient fashion, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are substantially reduced, relative to the use of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How are biogases boosting sustainability across their value chain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Supporting rural development and the agroecological transition<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Sourcing sustainable feedstocks: digestion of agricultural residues (sequential cropping), digestion of manure (digestate as organic fertiliser)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Generating renewable energy: biomethane, biogas, biohydrogen<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Defossilising end-uses and infrastructure (gas grid including seasonal energy storage; power & heat for buildings and industries; fuel for transport)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Valorising by-products to replace fossil-based alternatives (BioCO2 as feedstock)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Creating green jobs across the biogases value chain<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Monetisation of biomethane-related externalities (anaerobic digestion \u2014 <\/strong>84-175 \u20ac\/MWh; thermal gasification \u2014 <\/strong>80-162 \u20ac\/MWh)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n
