Fifth Ukrainian Company Starts Exporting Biomethane to the EU

Teofipol Energy Company, a UABIO member, has completed its first export of domestically produced biomethane to Hungary. It has become the fifth Ukrainian biomethane exporter and the fourth company to supply gaseous biomethane via pipelines.

In August 2026, Teofipol Energy Company exported approximately 45,000 m³ of gaseous biomethane. The shipment was transported through Ukraine’s gas transmission system, with Hungary-based ERU Europe acting as the buyer.

According to representatives of the supplying company, the company intends to continue deliveries in September and increase exports to as much as 200,000 m³. Its current biomethane production is estimated at approximately 1.4–2.8 million m³ per month.

Teofipol Energy Company commissioned its biomethane plant in Ukraine’s Khmelnytskyi region in early 2026. With a design capacity of around 56 million m³ per year, it is currently the largest operational biomethane project in Ukraine and the first facility of this scale to be connected directly to the national gas transmission system.

The company’s production complex processes organic feedstocks, including livestock farming residues, sugar beet pulp and other agricultural biomass. The resulting biogas is upgraded to natural-gas quality, enabling the biomethane to be injected into the gas network and supplied to customers in Ukraine and other European countries.

Ukraine is strengthening its presence in the European market

Ukraine began exporting biomethane in February 2025, when VITAGRO completed the country’s first pipeline delivery. MHP and Gals Agro (all companies are members of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine) subsequently started exporting gaseous biomethane, while MHP and UM Liquid Gas entered the market with liquefied biomethane, or bio-LNG.

In 2025, Ukrainian producers exported more than 11.2 million m³ of gaseous biomethane. With Teofipol Energy Company entering the market, Ukraine now has five biomethane exporters.

As of March 2026, the combined design capacity of Ukraine’s biomethane plants had reached approximately 108 million m³ per year. The Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture expects national capacity to increase to around 150 million m³ per year by the end of 2026, with a realistic target of 500 million m³ by 2030.

The sector’s expansion is also supported by the Ukrainian government’s Biomethane Production Development Programme until 2035. The programme aims to expand production capacity, develop domestic demand and integrate Ukrainian biomethane into the European energy market.

For Europe, biomethane is a renewable alternative to fossil natural gas that is already commercially available. It can be transported and stored using existing gas infrastructure and consumed by industry, the energy sector, households and transport. Under REPowerEU, the European Union aims to increase biomethane production to 35 billion m³ annually by 2030.

Every new producer and export delivery strengthens Ukraine’s position in the European renewable gas market. The ability to deliver biomethane through the existing gas transmission system shows that the Ukrainian sector is progressing from individual pilot projects towards a systematic and growing presence in the EU market.
