UABIO’s Position Paper №13 covers issues related to the state of the art and prospects for renewable energy development in the world, the European Union, and Ukraine. It contains an analysis of EU energy strategies as a whole and also individual energy strategies of some EU and world countries including Ukraine. The Paper considers the role of renewable energy sources in the strategies. Special attention is paid to the countries, which set a target to reach 50% RES in their final energy consumption by 2050. It is shown that in order to achieve this object it is necessary not only to develop RES capacities but also to reduce consumption of primary energy at the expense of introducing energy efficiency measures.
