This meeting was organized within the framework of the project Civil Society for Sustainable Energy – Local to National in Eastern Europe (SELNEE). The SELNEE Project has started in May 2020 and is an NGO Cooperation of Denmark, Ukraine and Belarus. The activities of the SELNEE project are aimed, in particular, at strengthening national actions on sustainable energy in Ukraine with proposals and advocacy activities, as well as exchange of information with civil society organizations.

Ukraine is implementing the National Renewable Energy Action Plan until 2020 (NREAP 2020), according to which it should reach 11% of RES in total gross final energy consumption, 12% in electricity consumption, 11% in heating and cooling and 10% in transport. The National Plan is likely to be met for the share of RES in electricity and not met in the heating / cooling and transport sectors.

The Energy Strategy until 2035 sets as the goal the achieving 25% of renewable energy sources in the TPES in Ukraine until 2035. The goals of the energy and climate policy of Ukraine for 2050 have not been developed or approved. At the beginning of 2020, the Ministry of Energy presented the Concept of a “green” energy transition by 2050 with the goal of reaching 60% of renewable energy sources in Ukraine’s TPES in 2050. Unfortunately, it was never officially approved by the Government.

In this situation, civil society, in our opinion, should unite and present a common position on the need for a sustainable energy transition and the achievement of climate neutrality in Ukraine in 2050 – 2070.
