Main conclusions

Unfortunately, the share of renewable energy sources in the transport sector in the world is very small — in 2015 it was only 4%.
In addition, electricity consumption from RES in transport was slightly more than 1% in 2015.
The usage of renewable energy sources (RES) in some countries is dominated by biofuels, mainly bioethanol and biodiesel.

Forecast of the sector’s development in the future

The Roadmap for Global Energy Transformation, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), envisages an increase in the share of RES in final energy consumption in the transport sector to 58% in 2050, including 28% of electricity from RES and 22% of liquid biofuels and biogases and 8% – hydrogen.
