On May 24, RGC and UABIO signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation — this is one more important step towards the development of biomethane production in Ukraine. The parties will implement the principles of sustainable development in Ukraine and will take measures aimed at implementing optimal solutions for the transition to a climate-neutral circular economy by 2050.

The key area of cooperation is joint activities for the development of biomethane in Ukraine. The parties will implement the principles of sustainable development in Ukraine and will take measures aimed at implementing effective solutions for the transition to a climate-neutral circular economy by 2050. In particular:

  • development and modernization of Ukraine’s energy sector integrated with the European market;
  • decarbonization of the energy market of Ukraine;
  • unlocking the potential of renewable gases in Ukraine;
  • energy efficiency increase;
  • balanced development of international and regional markets, trade and cooperation in the field of bioenergy, which is necessary for the energy transition;
  • maximizing the value of the national resources of Ukraine.

Let us remind you of several important events in this area:

  • Draft Law on Amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On Alternative Fuels for the Development of Biomethane Production” № 5464 of May 5, 2021. Link to the document: https://bit.ly/3wA10ib.
  • Georgii Geletukha’s article “Biomethane – the future of biogas” for the online media “Ekonomichna Pravda”. Link to the article: https://bit.ly/3yLmXwC.
  • Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between UABIO and the Gas TSO of Ukraine. More information here: https://uabio.org/en/news/9499/.
  • The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) project “Biomethane zoning and assessment of the possibility and conditions for connecting of biomethane producers to the gas transmission and distribution systems of Ukraine”, one of the participants of which is UABIO.

The project “Biomethane zoning and assessment of the possibility and conditions for connecting of biomethane producers to the gas transmission and distribution systems of Ukraine”

Main tasks:

  • Assessment of the biomethane production potential at the level of individual regions (oblasts) of Ukraine;
  • Analysis of Ukrainian main and distribution gas pipelines structure taking into account the geographical distribution of biomethane production potential;
  • Analysis of Ukrainian main and distribution gas pipelines structure taking into account the geographical distribution of biomethane production potential;
  • Description of economic conditions and technical aspects of biomethane supply to gas networks pipelines;
  • Legal analysis of conditions and requirements for injection of biomethane to distribution gas system network or transportation gas system network and its further transportation as a commodity from Ukraine to EU countries under Ukrainian laws.
