Natural gas in EU

By 2030, the biomethane sector will provide 20% of current EU gas imports from russia. Let us remind you that Ukraine has one of the greatest potentials in the biomethane production sector in Europe. Given the sanctions imposed on russia caused by the military aggression against Ukraine, the issue of abandoning the gas of the occupant will be resolved as soon as possible.

Yesterday, the European Biogas Association published a press release on the implementation of steps for the rapid development of the biomethane industry in Europe.

Main theses

  • Europe urgently needs to diversify and reduce its dependence on russian gas, while strengthening its ambitions for climate goals.
  • The sector is ready to supply 35 billion cubic meters of biomethane by 2030, proposed by the EU, and calls for this goal to be included in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), which is currently being developed.
  • The target for biomethane production is over 20% of current EU gas imports from russia.
  • By 2050, this potential could triple to more than 100 billion cubic meters and cover 30-50% of the EU’s future gas demand. This was stated by Harmen Dekker, CEO of the European Biogas Association (EBA).
  • Achieving today’s goal will require close public-private cooperation to attract capital investment. There is also a need for close cooperation between the European Commission and the Member States throughout the biomethane value chain.
  • A significant increase in biomethane production will provide affordable and sustainable energy for EU citizens and strengthen the EU economy. However, concerted actions of Member States will be crucial to improving energy security in the coming months and years.
