According to data from the European Biogas Association (EBA), the European biomethane sector will receive €25 billion in private investments by 2030. This is a 30% increase compared to the last year.

Furthermore, the second edition of the Biomethane Investments Outlook predicts an additional €2.1 billion of investments in the future. Investments will be directed to 950 new biomethane plants across Europe (1,300 facilities are currently operating).

Global impact

  • 6.3 billion cubic meters of annual biomethane capacity on the continent.
  • Emissions avoidance of approximately 29 million tons of CO2 each year.
  • Providing renewable energy to 5 million European households year-round.
  • Production of 830,000 tons of fertilizers annually.

Countries where the investments are mostly concentrated

  • Denmark (3.6 billion euros),
  • Poland (3.4 billion euros),
  • Italy (2.4 billion euros).

In Denmark, the share of biomethane in the gas grid is up to 40%. The state has plans to increase this production to replace 100% of gas demand by 2030.

REPowerEU

Two years after the launch of the #REPowerEU plan, the industry is rapidly reaching the biomethane production target of 35 billion cubic meters by 2030. The investments are crucial for unlocking the full potential of biomethane production and optimizing the construction of new plants across Europe.

Coordination the EU taxonomy with the REPowerEU biomethane`s targets will direct capital into this sector. The EU taxonomy plays a crucial role in stimulating green investments, although challenges with the implementation of verification criteria persist. It is important to apply coherent policies, maintain a stable regulatory framework and promote the long-term end-use of biomethane and its by-products.
