On July 4, 2025, a closed-door meeting was held for the members of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO) with Henning Dicks, Managing Partner and Founder of Agriportance GmbH, and one of Europe’s leading experts on biomethane. Mr. Dicks also serves as an advisor to the German government on energy and carbon policy.

Key discussion points

  • Price dynamics for biomethane in the EU: Price levels vary significantly depending on certification, country of origin, and logistics.
  • The biogenic CO₂ market: Growing demand and pricing opportunities for CO₂ by-products from biomethane plants.
  • Regulatory export barriers for Ukraine: EU RED II certification requirements, the importance of a transparent mass balancing system, and recognition of Ukrainian certificates within the EU market.

Agriportance GmbH is a German B2B SaaS startup founded in 2021, focused on supporting the biomethane and biogenic CO₂ sectors. UABIO expresses sincere thanks to Vitalii Radchenko, Managing Partner of CMS Ukraine and UABIO Board Member, for facilitating this expert dialogue.

During the event, participants explored the conditions for accessing the EU market, biomethane pricing mechanisms, trade prospects for biogenic CO₂, and key challenges facing Ukraine’s export model.

“The price of biomethane in Europe today is driven by its carbon footprint. The lower the emissions, the higher the product’s value,” — Henning Dicks emphasized.

He noted that the average price for low-carbon certified biomethane ranges between €80 and €110 per MWh, depending on the importing country and delivery format (pipeline or Bio-LNG).

We are not selling molecules — we are selling compliance

Нe underlined that the core value of biomethane lies in certified sustainability and traceability.

“Ukraine has huge potential, but without a robust accounting and verification system recognized in the EU, trade will be difficult — even if the product is high quality,” — said Mr. Dicks.

To export biomethane to Germany, companies must ensure mass balancing and proper greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting.

“The better your GHG reduction score, the better the price. That’s how the system works,” he explained.

Biomethane Pricing in Germany

According to Mr. Dicks, the average price for certified biomethane in Germany ranges from €90 to €110 per MWh, depending on carbon intensity and delivery method.

Meeting of UABIO members with Agriportance

There are three key pricing factors in the German market:

  • Natural gas market price (TTF/THE),
  • Greenhouse gas quota (similar to CO₂ certificates),
  • Sustainability parameters — including CI score and feedstock type (e.g., waste vs. crops).

UABIO members expressed concerns about Ukraine’s unstable regulatory environment and stressed the need for state support to foster a competitive biomethane sector. Jointly, participants discussed actionable solutions and policy directions to advance industry development.

Key Takeaways

  • НUkrainian producers should work with recognized certification schemes such as REDcertISCC, or SURE. Agriportance offers support with audits and mass balancing procedures.
  • Mass balancing and GHG reporting are essential for entering the EU market.
  • Prices for biogenic CO₂ are also rising — providing an additional revenue stream.
  • Agriportance is open to acting as a broker and technical partner for Ukrainian market participants.ер для українських гравців.

UABIO remains committed to engaging its members in expert-level dialogues and strengthening Ukraine’s position as a future exporter of sustainable biomethane to the EU.

These exclusive meetings with global industry leaders are a key benefit of UABIO membership.
