On 28 October 2025, a Ukrainian delegation as part of a study trip to Denmark visited the Vrejlev Biogas plant. In particular, it was visited by the chairman of the board of UABIO, Georgii Geletukha, and an Association expert, Semen Drahniev.

“For our delegation, visiting this biomethane plant was like visiting the future we are working so hard to achieve“, shared his impressions Georgii Geletukha.

The Vrejlev Biogas plant, built in 2016, produces 7.4 million m3/year of biomethane from pig manure, cattle manure and various plant residues, including straw. Plans for expansion by 2028 are to produce 42 million m3/year of biomethane.

Fast pyrolysis

The plant is the site of Denmark’s first commercial fast pyrolysis facility, which converts the solid fraction of digestate into pyrolysis fuel gas and solid carbon residue (biochar).

Electricity is generated from fuel pyrolysis gas to meet internal needs and for sale to the grid. Biochar is added to the soil as an organic fertiliser and carbon sink.

“Pyrolysis technology is completely innovative, and we were not allowed to take photos. The company is satisfied with the results of its demonstration operation and is currently installing a second such unit. One of the tasks it solves is the evaporation of ammonia from digestate, since the standards for nitrogen application to surrounding fields do not allow the corresponding amount of nitrogen in digestate to be applied to the soil”, notes Georgii Geletukha.

Future plans

The company’s near-term plans include the construction of a CO2 liquefaction plant for transporting it to the North Sea and storing it in depleted oil and gas fields.

Plans are also being discussed to build greenhouses for growing microalgae, using CO2, electricity, heat and nutrients from the biomethanation plant.

Microalgae are planned to be used as feed for pigs and for the manufacture of cosmetics. Depending on the market situation, the company is ready to produce Bio LNG for road and sea transport.

The trip of the Ukrainian delegation was organised by the We Build Ukraine with the participation of the Port of Aalborg, Denmark, and the Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine. The trip was dedicated to exploring opportunities for cooperation between Denmark and Ukraine in the use of biofuels for maritime transport.

We would like to thank all parties involved for organising this trip and look forward to fruitful cooperation between Ukraine and Denmark in the bioenergy sector. Moreover, the delegation came across Ukrainian flags many times in Denmark. We are sincerely grateful to Denmark and its people for supporting Ukraine in these difficult times!
