Low-carbon biomethane production: UABIO ‘s victory in the Innovate Ukraine Round 2 contest
We are happy to announce the victory in the contest “Innovate Ukraine Round 2: Supporting Ukraine’s Energy Recovery”!
Our project “Low-carbon biomethane production from crop residues and break/cover crops: integrating sustainable farming practice and CO2 utilisation” will be implemented by a consortium of UK and Ukrainian partners: University of Southampton (UK), Ukrainian Technological Company (Ukraine), and Bioenergy Association of Ukraine for 2 years.

About the project
The project’s primary aim is to provide industrial research and development for advanced biomethane production from crop residues and break/cover crops via anaerobic digestion with integration of good sustainable practices and CO2 utilisation to support integrity and circularity of bioenergy.
The technology will allow to unlock over 70% of overall biomethane potential of Ukraine, that reaches almost 22 billion cubic meters per year (bcm/year). Biomethane from crop residues and break/cover crops has the potential to provide the energy sector with the support it needs to achieve independence and decarbonization goals.
Project tasks
- Analysis and selection of effective technologies for collection, transport and storage of crop residues and intermediate/cover crops to create the most resource-efficient chain of actions from pre-fermentation preparation to post-treatment utilisation of crop residues and break/cover crops.
- Analysis and optimisation of anaerobic digestion of raw materials under lab conditions.
- R&D of Biomethanation of CO2 from digestion.
- Demonstration, analysis and optimisation of developed technologies under pilot conditions and development of recommendations for industrial implementation for the technology.
- Comprehensive assessment for all developed concepts (LCA, FS, CO2 utilisation routs, CIA).
