Cogeneration at a biomethane plant — the winning project of the 100 gREen AWARD-2025
The project “Cogeneration plant for the production of electricity and heat from biogas at a biomethane plant”, implemented by Vitagro Energy, ranks among the best green transformation projects of 2025 in the field of bioenergy!
This is the first of four projects that won in the bioenergy category. We will tell more about the others later.

About the project
The goal is to reduce electricity costs and CO2 emissions.
An analysis of the biomethane plant’s operations showed that its average electricity consumption is 300-320 kW. The company purchased electricity from the electricity supplier at market rates (first voltage class). Currently, this amounts to 21 million hryvnias in electricity costs per year.
The company calculated that by installing a cogeneration plant that would run on biogas, it would be able to reduce electricity purchase costs and lower CO2 emissions.
An additional bonus was the ability to extract the thermal energy needed to heat the fermenters. At the same time, the efficiency of the cogeneration plant will be maximised. Another effect of implementing such a project was a reduction in CO2 emissions, as electricity from the grid was replaced by electricity generated from renewable energy sources.

Key project details
The project was launched on 1 November 2025. The first days of operation proved that the decision was correct, as electricity restrictions began and the CHP plant allowed the factory to operate using its own energy resources.
Characteristics:
- CHP capacity — 400 kW;
- Annual replacement of electricity from the grid — 2.6 million kWh;
- Annual reduction in CO2 emissions — over 1,000 tonnes.
Finances:
- Project budget — 30.9 million UAH;
- Sources of funding for the project: the company’s own funds and a loan from the Ukraine Decarbonisation Fund.
The winners were selected by the Board of Global 100 RE Ukraine, which consists of representatives of green energy associations, including the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine. The best projects in each category were selected, and all teams involved in their implementation will receive awards. The 100 gREen AWARD-2025 recognise those who are truly changing Ukraine’s energy sector
