Note that in June 2021, the price of natural gas at European gas hubs exceeded $ 400/1000 m3. This is the highest cost in the last 6 years. At the same time, the World Bank forecasts a further increase in prices 2.5 times in the EU by 2030, compared to 2020.

That is why we believe that the sharp rising in natural gas prices threatens the heating season 2021 – 2022. The best way to solve the problem is the development of bioenergy. Thermal energy from biomass is absolutely competitive compared to gas. The members of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine presented their position and arguments in a letter to the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksii Danilov and other top managers of the state.

Today, bioenergy in Ukraine already replaces 4.2 billion m3 of gas per year, and this figure could increase to 20 billion m3 / year if the barriers to the development of the sector are overcome.

The team of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine with the support of the EBRD and GEF Programme “Ukraine: Sustainable Bioenergy Value Chain Innovation”  has developed a legislative and regulatory framework for bioenergy value chain development. Some of the draft laws were supported by the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and the Ministry of Energy, but none of them was agreed by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. You can get acquainted with the list of draft laws by downloading the letter.

Today, we ask to support the bioenergy sector, speed up work on overcoming barriers, as well as facilitate the adoption of proposed draft laws, their registration, and approval by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The position of the UABIO is prepared, discussed, and agreed upon by the members of the UABIO, which produce more than 50% of all energy from biomass and biogas in Ukraine.
