UABIO about the potential of Ukrainian biomethane at the Serbian conference
On March 13, 2025, the Serbian Biogas Association hosted its Annual Biogas Conference in Belgrade, gathering industry experts, policymakers, and business leaders to discuss the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in the biogas and biomethane sectors across Europe.
The Bioenergy Association of Ukraine was represented by legal expert Anna Pastukh. She gave a presentation on “Ukraine’s Path to Biomethane: from Idea to Reality”.

The main points of Anna Pastukh’s speech
Ukraine’s vast biomethane potential.
With over 20 bcm of technically feasible production by 2050, our country has the capacity to become a key supplier in Europe.
Regulatory progress.
Recent developments in Ukraine’s legislation are paving the way for biomethane certification, grid injection, and export alignment with EU market standards.
Cross-border cooperation.
Ukraine’s strategic location provides a solid foundation for collaboration with neighboring countries, including Serbia, in enhancing regional energy security.

Conference conclusions
Regional collaboration is essential.
Serbia, Ukraine, and other Eastern European countries have similar challenges but also shared opportunities in biomethane development. By aligning policies and market mechanisms, we can accelerate the energy transition together.
Investment interest is growing.
Financial institutions and private investors are actively exploring biogas and biomethane projects, recognizing their long-term potential in decarbonizing industry and transport.
EU integration is a driving force.
As Ukraine advances its European integration process, alignment with the RED II/III framework, Guarantees of Origin (GOs), and certification mechanisms are crucial for ensuring market access.

A big thank you to our Serbian colleagues and the Fachverband Biogas e.V. / German Biogas Association for organizing such a productive and insightful event. It was a pleasure to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships, and explore ways to make the biomethane sector more competitive and sustainable across our region.
The momentum for biogas and biomethane is stronger than ever, and Ukraine is ready to play a key role in Europe’s renewable energy future!
