In Ukraine, as an agricultural country, there will be no competitors among other potential producers of biogas for Europe, if we create conditions for the development of the sector of biogas production from crop residues. UABIO Head of the Board Georgii Geletukha stated this in an interview with the online media UBR.

Our global advantages:

  • availability of raw materials,
  • availability of gas transmission network,
  • the presence of a large European market nearby.

In the West, Ukraine is often called the “green Klondike”: we have a lot of agricultural waste, so our biomethane will be the cheapest compared to biomethane produced in the EU or any of its neighbors.

Market potential

Ukraine can produce 8 billion cubic meters of biogas per year – about the same amount of natural gas consumed by the Ukrainian population in 2020.

The cost of biomethane

Today, the cost of biomethane (depending on the raw material) is in the range of $ 350-700 per 1 thousand cubic meters, while the cost of natural gas – $ 250 per 1 thousand cubic meters. For Ukraine, it is still an expensive product. However, EU countries are ready to pay for biomethane. In addition, there are EU taxes on CO2 emissions and, accordingly, higher costs of traditional energy.

UABIO Head of the board forecast – biomethane will be produced for export to the EU in the next 5 years. Read about the opportunities for such business, potential consumers of biomethane, the problems of the sector, and the necessary legislative initiatives in the article.
