Georgii Geletukha presented vision of UABIO at the First Ukrainian Biomethane Forum
UABIO Head of the Board, Georgii Geletukha, spoke at the panel “Trading biomethane: Ukrainian and European expertise” of the First Ukrainian Biomethane Forum and expressed his vision on what steps are needed for the development of the biomethane production sector in Ukraine.

Ukraine has one of the largest biomethane production potentials in Europe — 21.8 billion m3/year. On its basis, a new export-oriented industry can be created, and over time, its consumption in the domestic market will be established.
What is needed for the development of the sector?
Government institutions and businesses must collaborate to amend existing ministry orders, fostering Ukraine’s biomethane export interests in the EU and other countries.
For domestic market expansion, Ukraine has to:
- Develop a comprehensive roadmap and strategy for the biomethane industry.
- Designate a ministry to oversee biomethane production development.
- Streamline procedures for connecting biomethane plants to gas networks.
- Establish a Ukrainian biomethane registry linked to the EU Union Database.
- Encourage gas distribution network modifications and installation of reverse flow compressors.
For biomethane usage in the transport sector of Ukraine:
- Promote biomethane usage as a motor fuel through legislative support, targeting public transport and agricultural machinery.
- Include biomethane consumption targets in the National Energy Strategy and specify gas filling station numbers.
- Support the development of CNG and LNG gas-filling station networks.
- Approve technical requirements for biomethane use as a motor fuel.
By implementing these strategies, we can drive the growth of biomethane production, consumption, and export in Ukraine.
